What’s affecting me, my clients and other small-business owners this week.

The Big Story: A Surplus of Yawns

President Obama’s budget, which includes $24 billion in cuts, sets off an election year fight. Here’s a good summary. The Calafia Beach Pundit says that fiscal austerity might not be so bad after all (Paul Krugman disagrees). Accounting Today sums up the budget’s tax changes as does Andrew Fieldhouse. Ezra Klein compares the Obama and Romney budgets and confirms that “our government is a big insurer with a big army.” Larry Doyle prefers Paul Ryan’s budget. Keith Hennessey says the administration’s 2.5-to-1 ratio of spending cuts to tax increases “is bogus.” Kent Hoover breaks down what the budget means for entrepreneurs. The chairman of the House Small Business Committee says the budget is bad for small business. But business groups just yawn. Rick Newman explains why none of it matters anyway. Suzy Khimm points to five things you probably missed.

Small-business sentiment is in a lull and the National Federation of Independent Business denounces Washington. Barbara Taylor explains how small businesses can hurt the economy. The Pulse of Commerce Index falls. Industrial production and producer prices (pdf) remain unchanged. Retail sales increase, as do the Residential Remodeling Index and builder confidence. But this quarter’s S.&P. 500 earnings growth was not so hot. Looks like there’s a shortage of demand planning analysts, and guess what: businesses that employ undocumented workers do better. Seth Godin points out the curious nature of selfishness: “Sharing your money, your ideas, your insights, your confidence … all of these things return to you. Perhaps not in the way you expected, and certainly not with a guarantee, but again and again the miser falls behind.” Roshawn Watson offers the ultimate guide to becoming a doer: “It is important to every doer to honor his differences and use them to his competitive advantage.” Here are eight inspirational videos to get you pumped.
This Week’s Bests

Path to Success. Ingrid Wickelgren explains how to achieve success in seven short steps, including, “Write a gratitude letter”: “If addressing an individual is uncomfortable or inappropriate, pen a note to yourself about all the things that are going well or that you feel fortunate to have. Set aside a time each day to do this. For instance, write one journal entry each night just before bed listing the good things that happened to you and what you are grateful for. Too much of the time, we focus on our fears and problems, because those relate to situations we need to avoid or solve to survive. But if you stop to count your blessings, you will realize how lucky you are.”

Leadership Lesson. Hitendra Wadhwa explains how Lincoln became America’s greatest president: “Changing oneself isn’t easy, so even as president, Lincoln’s anger occasionally consumed him, making him pour it out in letters to critics, errant generals, and others. He had the self-discipline though to not dispatch these ‘hot’ letters; they were later discovered, unsigned, in a drawer in the president’s desk. In this way, one small step at a time, Lincoln built his self-discipline, and through it, the character of his presidency. Lincoln’s journey suggests that the true measure of a leader lies not in how much we cultivate and exploit our strengths, but in how we work on tapping, in Lincoln’s words, the ‘better angels of our nature’ to use our strengths in the service of a cause much higher than our own personal gain.”

This Week’s Question: Do you think the president’s budget would help your business?

Bonus Beats: Chris Brown and Rihanna have reunited on a new single leaving many to question the credibility of the victim and the remorse of the convicted. And with that I’m done. I don’t want to hear about Rihanna anymore. I don’t want to hear about Chris Brown anymore. I don’t want to hear about Rihanna and Chris Brown anymore. I don’t want to hear about how Brown beat Rihanna the night before the Grammy Awards a few years ago. I don’t want to hear about his probation.

Though I was never a fan of either one, as someone who covers their doings on a regular basis, it is impossible to ignore either of them, considering that it is my job to report the music news and they are musicians who often find themselves in the news.

But now, with this latest twist in the saga, I see no reason to write about either of them any longer. We have become a society that embraces freakshows to such an extent that little is sacred. The kids from Jersey Shore are multi-millionaires because they behave like animals and perpetuate Italian stereotypes. Gym, tanning, and laundry has proven a surer way to success than reading, writing, and arithmetic is. We have become a society that rewards a man who beat a woman with multiple stage performance opportunities at the Grammy awards ceremony, and then, for good measure, a Grammy award.

Over the past several days, Brown’s defenders have been vocal that everyone deserves a second chance. Everyone? Did we forgive Bernie Madoff for stealing over 65 million from his clients? Or did we throw a forgiveness party for Jeffrey Dahmer? Now, comparing Brown to a man who killed more than 17 people might be unfair, we, as a society, have decided to accept just about anything short of mass murder if the criminal can sing or dance or act.

Perhaps Chris Brown did deserve a second chance. There are plenty of women who posted on Twitter that they would let Brown beat them if it also ensured that they could be with him. Clearly, they were not offended by his ubiquity at the Grammy awards. My wife, who is not a fan of Brown or Rihanna pointed out that Rihanna is no angel (and, in fact, is, by her own admission, a certifiable freak) and while she didn’t deserve to be beaten, the minute she went back to Brown (and numerous stories over the past few weeks have indicated that the two have rendezvoused secretly) it compromised her credibility as a victim. Rihanna is not the typical beaten spouse. She had all of the opportunities and money she needed to get out of the relationship if she so desired.

At the time of the crime, many stories indicated that Brown fought with Rihanna after he learned that she allegedly gave him an STD. Even if she did, it would not justify his behavior; however, one wonders whether Brown settled with the district attorney as quickly as he did after being charged for beating Rihanna not because he thought that he might be acquitted, but because he did not want to air Rihanna’s dirty laundry at trial, and knew that after a period of time, he would get back together with her.

Brown, on his Twitter feed Sunday night wrote, “HATE ALL U WANT BECUZ I GOT A GRAMMY Now! That’s the ultimate F–K OFF!” Clearly, he is the same immature asshole he was when he beat his girlfriend. Clearly, he has learned nothing from the events of the past few years. Clearly, Chris Brown feels like he was wronged. There is no sign of remorse. There is no sign of maturity. There is no sign that, facing similar circumstances, he wouldn’t do the same thing he did to Rihanna again to her or to someone else.

The rest of us need to focus on something more positive. There are plenty of great musicians who deserve attention. And that’s that.

The question was: What year was MUCC founded and what year did it begin Outdoorama? The answer was: 1937 and 1974.

The winners of two free tickets – a $20 value – can pick up tickets at the Outdoorama Will Call window. They are: Mark May, Warren; John Williams, Clarkston; Ed Schultz; Alan Hafeli, Oxford; Craig Irwin; Glenn Ather, Royal Oak; Charlie Schmidt, Harrison Township; Tom Isaacs, West Bloomfield; Mike Schany; John Chandler, Berkley; and John Trendel, Madison Heights.

OK, you didn’t win. No worries, we got another question this week. The first 10 readers to correctly answer this week’s question will also win two tickets to Outdoorama. I’ll announce the winners in next week’s column.

Also, all folks who answered the question correctly will have a chance at a grand prize, which I’ll draw by lottery and post on this page next week. The grand-prize winner will get a new Clam ice-fishing shanty valued at $300.

Here is this week’s question: If Michigan’s Fred Bear was alive today, he would be amazed at the technological advances in bows and arrows, and crossbows. Born in 1902, the world’s best-known bow hunter produced superior archery equipment at his factory in Grayling, which also was home to the legendary Fred Bear Museum. The famous bow hunter opened his museum in 1967, but by 1985 it was moved to another place. Name the city and state where the Fred Bear Museum is now located.

Good luck, folks.

Chicago — The Chicago Auto Show just might have the right focus.

It’s the ultimate deep dish shopping for consumers, with more than 1 million feet of exhibit space that allows them to see more models and more types of cars at the same time than any other show. McCormick Place, furthermore, is a playground of automotive happiness, with four indoor test tracks and five outdoor drive programs that allow consumers to test drive cars by seven automakers.

Among American auto shows, Chicago offers the largest showroom. Measured by overall facility space (McCormick boasts more than 2.7 million feet of exhibit hall space plus 700,000 square feet of meeting rooms), all of the other major U.S. auto shows — Los Angeles, Detroit, and New York City — could fit inside the space here at the same time.

And as the 2012 show kicks off with its media preview today, organizers of the most-attended auto show in the country are excited by the prospects for the future.

“I see a resurgence of the industry,” said Dave Sloan, general manager of the Chicago Auto Show.

“You just have a sense that the flood gates are going to open. I just can’t wait to open the doors to this show.”

There are high hopes for this year’s show, though Chicago officials wouldn’t offer attendance projections. Last year’s numbers were up 10 percent from the year before.

Despite its size and crowds, the Chicago show takes a back seat to the industry-focused Motor City show.

The North American International Auto Show in Detroit hosted more than 40 vehicle debuts last month; Chicago will offer less than half that, suggesting the Windy City is less important to carmakers, who are opting to debut vehicles at other shows.

“It seems that the automakers have decided that it’s a great regional sales show,” said Aaron Bragman, an industry analyst at IHS Automotive. “They don’t have the international media, but Chicago is a big market, and it is a significant import market.”

Which may be one of the reasons VW will show off its all new, diesel-powered Beetle TDI in Chicago, and Toyota will launch its new Land Cruiser. Both will be relatively small volume vehicles in the U.S. market.

Still, there a few important debuts in Chicago, including the 2013 GMC Acadia, the mega-powerful 2013 Ford Shelby Mustang GT500 convertible, a futuristic version of the popular Kia Soul and a handful of Mopar-edition vehicles.

Ed Kim, an automotive analyst for AutoPacific Inc. said that the 2013 GMC Acadia could be one of the most important vehicles shown in Chicago. Details about the redesigned Acadia were scheduled to be released this morning.

“I also think the Track’ster could give us a look at the future Kia Soul,” Kim said.

While the Track’ster is a concept vehicle, many like Kim believe it will show the direction Kia wants to move with its popular small, urban van.

“The Soul has become a halo vehicle of sorts for Kia and it’s extremely important to the brand,” Kim said.

Ford Motor Co., meanwhile, hopes to generate some excitement when it unwraps the 2013 Ford Shelby Mustang GT500 convertible, a 650-horsepowered tanning machine.

Among other automakers, Nissan Motors Co. will showcase an all-new 370Z, a low-volume sports car that is also important to its brand, while Acura will roll out the production versions of the ILX and redesigned RDX.

Perhaps a more practical vehicle will be the Hyundai Elantra Coupe, which could boost sales for the popular compact.

But really, the Chicago show seems to be more focused on trim levels than new vehicles. Mopar, Chrysler Group LLC’s aftermarket brand, will debut limited-edition vehicles that enthusiasts can build a piece at a time.

The Fiat 500 Stinger, the Dodge Dart GTS 210 and the Mopar 300 will come loaded with aftermarket parts and more than a few performance enhancements. Jeep will debut the Jeep Compass True North edition, as that brand continues to try and toughen up the small crossover.

But that’s the thing about Chicago: It may not have all of the big debuts, but it offers vehicle displays with all of the options. A consumer-focused car show may not make the biggest media buzz, but it just might sell a lot of cars.

And nowadays, that’s not a bad thing at all.
